Allison McIntyre (b. 1999 West Virginia) pulls from animal imagery and digital aesthetics to respond to contemporary human-animal relations, wrestling with issues such as the climate crisis and extinction. She received a B.F.A. in painting at the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2020 and is studying and working in GA. Her work has been exhibited in Orlando, FL and Savannah, GA, including in the show “Animal Farm” at the Gutstein Gallery in Savannah. She is currently investigating digital means of making artwork accessible during this time of pandemic and quarantine.

Living in this age of hypermediation and the environmental crisis necessitates discussion of the animal world. Interactions with nonhumans are almost always mediated—-whether in zoos, museums, digital media, etc.--and nonhumans often function as mediators. The animal world is objectified, contained, and simulated. Synthetic voices are applied to it.

The trail camera provides us a glimpse of animal behavior that would be otherwise hidden from us, as our presence modifies their behavior. Video games have long used nonhumans as narrative tools, simulating animals for the entertainment of humans. My interest lies in the artificiality of nonhumans' environments and the mediated interactions between nonhumans--often simulated--and humans.

Humankind's artificial sense of separation from nature fuels the global crisis we are experiencing now. Is the rapid global proliferation of digital animal imagery a direct result of their increasing absence in our daily lives? Is animal imagery in art capable of inspiring change?
